My name is Emily B. from Provo.
I am collecting data about common birds which winter in Utah county for my
high school biology class.
I have tried to attract birds to my yard so I could observe them. I have
put out wild bird seed, cut-up apples and sunflower seeds. So far,
everything appears to be untouched. I've scattered seed on top of the snow
to try and get the attention of the birds. I have two birdfeeders full of
seed hanging from the edge of a back porch (which birds used to feed from
several years ago). The porch is surrounded with lots of trees and bushes
that give LOTS of natural protection for birds.
Our side yard has a huge pyracantha bush in it which birds have often nested
in--but this year the orange berries have not been eaten--and there is no
observable bird activity.
So far I've seen one bird: A big black & white magpie that snatched
a flower bulb from by our back door and flew off.
We also now have a mouse in the house who LOVES the birdseed!
Help! Any ideas on what to try next?
And what birds are YOU seeing at your Utah County birdfeeders?
Thank you, Emily
