September 27th (Sat): Squaw Peak Road - Utah Valley raptor watch - Led by Eric Huish. We will bird in Provo Canyon and along the Squaw Peak Road until around 11 a.m. then we will sit out at 'Hawk Knoll' and watch the hawks migrate past (weather permitting). Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Orem 800 North park-and-ride just East of the gas station at the mouth of Provo Canyon. Bring a lunch and drink if you plan on staying the whole day.

Ned and Keeli pointed out to me that the DWR is also hosting a raptor watch on the same day at the Squaw Peak overlook (parking area). We can bird from the parking area or from the top of the hill South of the squaw peak overlook. I spent some time at the overlook parking area last Friday. Most of the hawks I saw seemed closer to the hilltop than the parking area. I spent a few hours on the hilltop on Sunday. Same day and time Tim and others were seeing Broad-wings up north. I may have seen a Broad-wing but it was distant and almost directly below me. Plain brown on top. Many of the accipiters on Sunday were flying by less then 20 feet away and there was a Red-tail hunting in the wind. The Red-tail was floating perfectly still in midair, close enough to fill the scope at 20x. It was staying so still in the middle of the air I could set the scope on it and my Mom and Dad took turns looking at it without ever adjusting the scope. It was pretty cool. The hike to the hilltop is about a half mile from a spot along the road above the parking area. The parking area is easy to get to and you can come and go as you like.
