Hey all,

Here's hoping and praying that Kris Purdy has a full
recovery.

I have a small collection of recent sightings:

Yesterday I observed a female Merlin perched atop a
tall evergreen tree on the corner of 500 E 200 N in
Provo. The tree is on the southwest corner of the
intersection and has lost all of its needles (tamarack
maybe?). The bird sat cooperatively for quite a while.
Hopefully it is hanging around this neighbourhood and
will return to this perch, or others nearby.

Today I saw many waxwings on BYU Campus (100s). THere
were several flocks flying around, including one of
over 100. I finally managed to find some perched and
picked out 12 Bohemians amongst them. A Kestrel flew
over and spooked them all and it appeared that there
were more than 20 Bohemians when they flew. These
birds were in the tall sycamore-like trees by the
outdoor entrance to the BYU Bookstore on the southwest
side of the Wilkinson Student Center.

A map of campus can be found here: http://map.byu.edu/

The trees are in the area between building number 13
and number 36 on the map. There is also a row of
fruiting trees here that are excellent for waxwings at
times.

Also from campus today I saw an immature Sharp-shinned
Hawk (going for the small raptor sweep).

Happy Snow Day,
