[ucbnet] New Year's Day Birds

The bright sunshine made it seem much warmer than the chill 8° as Milt Moody, Tuula Rose, Eric Huish and I set out for our annual bird chase on New Year's Day morning. We headed for South Utah County. It remained cold, and even at midday the temperature registered just 19 chilly degrees! Obviously that did not discourage the birds, because we had a very successful trip, and counted 57 species total for the half day. The best birds of the day were the Red-Breasted Mergaser at Salem Pond and a Prairie Falcon perched on a pole in one of the fields we passed near Spanish Fork. It was also a great "raptor" day ~ we ended with 8 species on our list. In addition we also spotted Great-tailed Grackles at the WalMart in Springville, and found half dozen Black-crowned Night Herons on Heron Island at the East Bay Business Park in Provo. Taking the birds straight off my list:
