Thanks to all who replied about the date guide/bird
sightings for Utah County (and other areas). I
apologize for the late response. I am too busy with
school to really get involved in pursuing something
like this, but I think it would be a good thing to do
to take the focus off vagrants, and increase the # and
importance of daily birding reports (Rarity reports to
Birdnet/ Daily reports to birdtalk or elsewhere). The
only problem I see with a date guide for a county is
that Utah has altidudinal migrants, so a bird with
only be unusual during certain dates at certain
altitudes. Comments?
Many have commented on the use of ebird to generate
trip reports. While I think this is a great idea that
encourages people to submit their #'s, I feel that it
is still important to have an individual who
interprets these reports on a monthly basis and writes
up a monthly noteworthy bird sightings report, in a
species by species format, (or maybe just every few
months).
example:
Common Loon: 2 at (location) on the (date) F(first of
migration) and 10 there (max # for migration) on
(date) were noteworthy; 3 at (location) L (last of
migration).
Not every species need be included, unless something
noteworthy were seen. Example: American Robin: 1
albino individual at (location) on (date).
It really isn't as difficult as it might sound, much
like Tim Avery write up a synopsis of Birdnet and
other reports for a Utah bird hotline.
Comments?
Cheers
