Hi Casey,
The behavior of your colorful birds suggests to me an American Goldfinches which have striking colors similar to the Western Tanager and the Bullock's Oriole (The Western Tanagers are more likely to be in the Mountains and both W. Tanager and B. Orioles would be more likely in big cottonwood trees along a stream -- like the Provo River and more alone rather than in groups). Anyway, if you check the picture or the A. Goldfinch, that would be a good possible ID.
You're welcome to come on any of our field trips -- that's a good way to learn a lot of the common birds around here. This time of year we usually see at least 40 or 50 species in a morning -- it's a great time of year.
Have a good one,
Milt Moody
