Greetings,
I saw 27 Cattle Egrets near some cattle near the Provo River oxbow this morning. Probably the same group that was heading north in the spring and they're on their way back now.
I saw some Brewer's Sparrows at the beginning of the Skipper Bay trail on the chain-link fence and I hear some Sandhill Cranes in the fields to the east of the trail. Pretty nice birds.
Back by the oxbow I saw something I'd never seen before -- it was quite a surprise. I saw a hummingbird chasing a Downy Woodpecker! I thought, "what?!" "what the heck!?!"
I mean, it could have been -- possibly, a rufous? -- that could MAYBE explain such behavior, aaaah, but still... I wouldn't tangle with a woodpecker, not even a little downy. My jaw dropped and my eyes popped open -- never know what you're going to see in this business.
Happy fall migration to all,
Milt
