From ryan at biology.usu.edu Sun Nov 1 19:20:01 2009 From: ryan at biology.usu.edu (Ryan O'Donnell) Date: Sun Nov 1 19:20:08 2009 Subject: [TopOfUtah] Dunlin in Logan, etc. Message-ID: Craig Fosdick and I birded Denzil Stewart Nature Park and Sue's Ponds in Logan this afternoon. The best bird of the day was a lone DUNLIN with six LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Sue's Ponds. A digiscoped photo of the Dunlin is here: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n105/Tsirtalis/DUNLsmall.jpg I've also been to the Sewage Lagoons and Polishing Ponds of Logan's wastewater treatment plant several times in the last week. Ducks have been dense on each visit, with NORTHERN SHOVELERS and GADWALL in the thousands, and winter species are starting to show up in good numbers, including a few RING-NECKED DUCKS and LESSER SCAUP, and about 50 BUFFLEHEAD. Two COMMON LOONS were seen mid-week last week, and four RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were present yestereday. In the warm weather this weekend, many MARSH WRENS and one RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD were heard singing. Try as I might, I have not yet been able to turn up any scoters or Pacific Loons in the county yet. Aside from a single REDHEAD, there were no ducks and few waterbirds at the Marina. A single HORNED GREBE was one of few I have seen this fall. We did find first-of-season (for me at least) ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW. A stop at the Bear River Oxbow produced ~2,500 gulls, mostly RING-BILLED GULLS, as well as a smaller number of CALIFORNIA GULLS, at least one HERRING GULL, and a very late FRANKLIN'S GULL. We ended the trip by relocating three of the FERRUGINOUS HAWKS (all light-morphs) that have been hanging out near Clarkston this fall. We got fantastic looks at one of the birds! Good birding, Craig Craig Fosdick Logan, Utah. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
