Couple quick notes about yesterday's Audubon field trip...
We started out exploring the fields of Benson and Amalga and found that
numbers of Sandhills are on the rise - we had 3 a week ago, this time we had
about 8 or 9. Benson Marina area had a ton of Common Mergansers and a good
number of Herring Gulls. We scanned through the flocks of Canada Geese in
the fields and didn't find anything too unusual, but there were a handful of
Tundra Swans. Also, at the pig farm area (is that Sam Fellow Rd?) we saw a
Peregrine Falcon on some irrigation equipment, really close to 4 Tundra
Swans and across the street from a field full of Canada Geese and
Ring-billed Gulls.
We proceeded up to Smithfield and checked out Mac park and the cemetery
where we found 3 White-winged Crossbills. Up in Birch Creek Canyon we found
a Red-tailed Hawk sitting on a nest.
As for the signs of spring in wildflowers, there were a handful of them on
the 5 hills trail, including a ton of Death Camus and other things I can't
recall the names of!
Have fun out there!
