Reinhard Jockel and I went out for a day of birding around the east
valley today and we hauled in 50 species.

We started at the fish hatchery area where we picked up 3
Black-crowned Night-Herons and an American Pipit. We also found a dead
Starling stuck in a tree and below it was the severed Starling head,
frozen to the ground! We assumed there was an owl around somewhere but
didn't see it.

Next we went to the 20-20 Ponds area where we saw 12 duck species
including Greater Scaup (male and female), 6 Wood Ducks, 1 Pintail,
and several Canvasbacks. We also found Am. Tree Sparrows in the
bushes.

At Logan River Golf Course, not much on the trail, but the pond held
Redheads and several other species previously seen.

Lastly, we picked up Anne and went for a couple miles into Green
Canyon where we got Chukars and Solitaires. On the way home, we
stopped at First Dam and saw the Hooded Merganser female (along with a
Common Merg. female).

All in all a decent day. Reinhard has also discovered that Chukars can
be reliably found on the south-facing hills below the University in
case anybody is looking for them. He's seen them a couple times in the
past week or two.

Good birding,

Jason Pietrzak
