I did a loop around the valley today in the balmy 39-degree weather. My
main goal was to find the Northern Mockingbird recently reported by Ron
Ryel, but I couldn't relocate it. I found a flock of 200-300 Horned
Larks near Cache Junction but didn't see or hear anything different
mixed in. One GREATER YELLOWLEGS is still at the Logan Fish Hatchery
and was visible from the highway. There was a good diversity of
waterfowl at the Logan Golf Course, including Ring-necked Ducks,
Redheads, Mallards, Canada Geese, American Wigeon, Common Goldeneye, and
one female CANVASBACK. Ron Ryel had a Richardson's Cackling Goose here
a couple of days ago, but I couldn't pick any out on this trip. Most of
the geese were sleeping with their heads tucked in, which can make
spotting a Cackler difficult to impossible.
Good birding,
Ryan
