This afternoon I birded three locations in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, all in
Cache Co. First I stopped at the Utah DWR fishing access at the mouth of
the canyon (not much going on there); next stop was Pioneer CG, which though
it had lots of snow patches, it also had very vocal Fox Sparrows and
Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

Finally, I walked 1.7 miles up the road from the OHV and snowmobile parking
area at Hardware Ranch. The biggest surprise here was a Marsh Wren I saw in
a 6-m x 20-m patch of crushed cattails about 1 mi up road from OHV parking.
Further up the road I had a singing Sage Thrasher, and a Lincoln's Sparrow,
both foy birds for me. And, at one point, I looked up at a cumulus cloud
and saw a dot that with the aid of binoculars was resolved into a northbound
Red-tailed Hawk, which was soon followed by a Sandhill Crane and an
unidentified buteo whose shape and color strongly suggested Ferruginous
Hawk, but it was just too far and too high.
Good birding, Craig
