Thanks to Kristin’s email I was able to see the American Three-toed Woodpecker this morning. The birds are easily seen from the picnic table in site 11, Monte Cristo Campground. This was a lifer bird for me. If you plan to see the birds, you should take industrial strength mosquito repellant to deal with the thousands of mosquitoes (minus the 200 plus mosquitoes that followed me back into my car). Normally I would say that a lifer bird was the best bird of the day, but today that honor goes to a Dusky Grouse that could not make its mind up about what side of SR-39 it wanted to be on. This bird went back and forth across the road, being passed over by numerous cars and trucks before it finally decided on which side of the road it wanted to be on. If you are planning a trip to Vegas, you should take this bird with you: it defies the odds and has to be the luckiest bird alive.
Thanks.
