This morning at 7:45 am, Kim Sullivan's Ornithology class went birding for
two hours at Amalga Barrens in Cache Valley. We drove part way in, then
walked along the ditch with binoculars and scopes to see what was out and
about. We saw 38 species in all, represented mostly by ducks and shorebirds.
Also, we got another good look at some perched and flying short-eared owls!
Below is the complete list:
Eared Grebe, American White Pelicans, Great Egret, Canada Goose, Wood Duck,
Mallard, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal,
Cinnamon Teal, Lesser Scaup, Turkey Vulture, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed
Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, American Coot,
Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Killdeer, Lesser
Yellowlegs, Willet, California Gull, Rock Dove, Short-eared Owl,
Black-billed Magpie, Tree Swallow (in a flock of about 40), Marsh Wren,
American Robin, American Pipit, Vesper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Western
Meadowlark, Red-winged Blackbird, and Yellow-headed Blackbird.
We also saw a weasel and a muskrat.
