This morning Kim Sullivan's Ornithology class went birding on the gravel
road by the airport--Hyde Park Road and at the Benson Oxbows. On Hyde Park
road we saw many small passerines including a small flock of about 10
American Pipits, several solitary singing Western Meadowlarks, American
Robins, Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds. In standing water we saw
Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintails, and Mallards. We also saw several
Killdeer, a Northern Harrier, and a pair of Red-tailed Hawks. Highlights
included a Snipe perched on a wooden corral, and a Short-eared Owl perched
on a fencepost which later flew up to join a second short-eared owl.
At the Benson Oxbows we saw the EURASIAN WIGEON that has been around for the
past week! Other waterfowl included lots of American Wigeon, common and
red-breasted mergansers, mallards, northern shovelers, northern pintails,
american coot, gadwall, american white pelicans that were fishing, canada
geese, and a great blue heron.
