[TopOfUtah] Birding at Hyrum Dam in Cache Valley

Top O' the Mornin' Top of Utah!!!
If I'm not mistaken, Milt, I think I've got the FIRST report in for Top Of
Utah!!!

I spent all day at Hyrum Dam and Porcuipine Reservoir in Cache Valley .  It
was a gorgeous day.  Hunters were certainly having a good time around Hyrum
Dam.  I had a pretty good view of most of the birds on the lake until
something splashed in the water and all the birds flew out of range of my
binoculars before I could really get a thorough look at what was there. I
managed to sight some birds before that happened.  I realllly  need a
spotting scope.  Any suggestions on what to get and camera attachments,
etc.??  Anyone willing to donate the funds for my purchase of said spotting
scope???  :-)

*Hyrum Dam:* I went to the South? end of the reservoir (the end opposite the
dam) where the marshes are and you can seen the  River coming into the
reservoir.  I'm not sure I know what river it is that flows into Hyrum Dam.
Anyway, I didn't see a lot of birds that I could identify but I did see some
great things.

Bald eagle   1 adult male
Bufflehead   2 males, 5 females
Lesser scaup  3 males, females were possibley present ,also, but I'm not
familiar witht hem.
Canada Geese   75
Gulls  1000 (ID unknown, but what I saw flying around the farm lands I think
was the California?)
Other ducks (they were too far for my binocs to make out what they were, but
I suspect mallards and cinnamon teals)  45
black-capped chickadees   5
house finches   6
black billed magpies   3
American Coot    10
ring-necked pheasant  heard 2

*Porcuipine Reservoir:*
I drove arount the first hair pin turn, then pulled over where I had a good
view.  The water is really low, so everything was a bit far for my binocs,
but there are some birds that I know fairly well, so I'm confident in their
IDs.  There were only a very few birds there.

canvasback    4 males
Lesser Scaup   3 males + possibly 4 females
California gulls  10
hooded merganser 2 (males)
black-capped chickadees 6
Magpies 4
