Birding in Washington county today felt more like I was birding in Canada!
Very cold for this area. So I guess when I stopped at Gunlock Res. and there
was a female Barrow's Goldeneye mixed in with the Common's it was only
fitting. It's the first one I've seen in the county.
The other odd bird that I saw today ( probably not because of the cold ) was
a Sapsucker that fit everything perfect for a Adult male Yellow-bellied
except it had some red on the nape. It had a solid red throat surrounded by
a solid black malar. The white supercilium and moustachial were wider than
the black eyestripe. The back was mostly white not just 2 rows of white. The
primaries and secondaries had more white in them then you see in Red-napped.
The bird was either a Y B with some red on the nape a R N with way more
white in the plumage and a solid black malar or another dreaded hybrid.
Which any of those are possible.
