Hi Rick,
You probably already have your report done and submitted
but I thought I would send you a short belated report
anyway. Did my breeding bird surveys in June but nothing
unusual to report there. I made a couple of trips out to
Quichapa Lake. The water level is still high and birds are
surprising scarse -- except for coots. Lots of nesting
coots, probably a minimum of 30 pairs. Saw 5 to 6
black-crowned night-herons but no indication of nesting.
There were about 50 eared grebes (none nesting) and 10
Clark's grebes. At least 1 pair of Clark's grebe nested
there, a first record for Quichapa.
My wife and I will be leaving in early October on an 18
month LDS mission to Nigeria. It will be an interesting
experience and I'm sure I will see a few new birds there. I
will try to remember to send you a fall report before I
leave.
Good birding.
Steve
