[reccom] Making Our Records' Comments Public

Fellow Committee Members:

What do you think about making our completed votes with comments available
to the public without anyone having to request them from our Secretary?

I was talking to a friend yesterday (who has never submitted a record) and
he mentioned an impression he has of our committee, and of other records
committees--that we're an aloof bunch. Whether or not we deserve the
reputation, it's out there. I think it comes from our doing our work out of
the public eye and the results of our deliberations aren't widely available.
Sure, anyone can request votes and comments on completed records from our
Secretary. But not many people know that.

The only thing secret about our process is that we can't discuss records
with each other in the first round. No other part of our results is secret.
If we need to discuss an issue among ourselves, we have this list serv to to
that.

Our comments could be available on the records committee page and we could
ask our secretary to send a link (or hardcopy, if appropriate) to the
observer who submitted the record. That person (people) might appreciate the
automatic feedback generated from their submitting a record. Making our
entire results easily available might be a good PR move.

So...please contribute your opinion. Should we make our completed votes with
comments available to the public automatically?

Kris
