Gents,
Please share with our group the references you use to shed light upon
Cackling Goose identification.
After reviewing the vote on Cackling Goose record 2008-02 and reliving my
own angst from record 2007-23, I believe I'm living Angus Wilson's
prediction regarding the Cackling Goose/Canada Goose split:
"A downside is that field identification can be highly problematic and the
split creates potential headaches for state/provincial records committees,
regional compilers and the like."
I felt like I tapped the best resources to identify Cackling Geese and I was
still left with questions. Here are the internet resources:
Angus Wilson's web page:
http://www.oceanwanderers.com/CAGO.Subspecies.html#update
Mark Stackhouse's letter:
http://www.utahbirds.org/RecCom/NewGoose.htm
Harry Krueger's ID guide, which I think is the best of any I saw:
http://www.utahbirds.org/RecCom/NewGoose.htm
Mobrey et.al in Cornell's BNA online, subscription service:
http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna
Sibley:
http://www.sibleyguides.com/canada_cackling.htm
(Big Sibley depicts six of the eleven subspecies and simply calls B. h.
minima the Cackling Goose, which was convention when the book was published
in 2000.)
Rick tried to send us a publication from Oregon's Department of Fish and
Wildlife, but I believe the file was too large to squeeze past most servers.
I sent Oregon a request for the pub and never got a response.
Are there any others you find particularly useful?
Kris
