Hello Jason -
I'm happy to know there will be another birder in our midst soon.
The Moab Bird Club meets the third Tuesday of each month, at 6:30. Club members take turn hosting the meetings. The meetings are always potluck. We try to have a program for each meeting but don't always. We have three regular field trips each year, plus the Christmas Bird count sometime in mid Dec. to early Jan. Our winter field trip, usually the end of Jan or early Feb, is out to the Cisco desert to look for raptors. We had pretty good success on Feb. 7. In April, we stop at Goose Island, on the Colorado River, to look for Peregrines, which nest near there, then on up 128 to the Great Blue Heron rookery. The end of September, we travel to the head of Fisher Valley, above Castle Valley, to look for migrating raptors. Last year was a real bust, but it is that way sometimes.
If you would like to be added to the list serve, I would be happy to keep you informed about meetings, field trips and an occasional rare bird alert. Just let me know.
There are many places to bird in the area. The Matheson Wetlands Preserve, on the Colorado River, is a popular place. Last year there was a large fire that burned quite a bit of habitat...both good and bad. The Nature Conservancy owns the preserve and had plans to do some prescribed burning to reduce Russian Olive, Tamarisk and bulrushes that are choking some of the area and causing a haven for mosquitoes. Birding along Hwy 128 is good for ducks and geese right now. There are several side canyons off the Colorado River, most notable is Negro Bill Canyon, with year-round water. The La Sal Mountains are good, especially around the lakes...Warner, Oowah. Gold Basin is a place we like to hike late in the summer or early fall. So there is a nice variety of country.
Keep in touch.
Marian Eason

Moab birders,
I am going to be relocating to Moab from Logan, UT for the summer and maybe longer.
My understanding is that there's a Moab Birders' Club that has occasional events - is there a place to watch for announcements?
In addition, does anybody have any recommendations on good places around town and in the region to bird? I'm completely new to the area.
Thanks,
Jason Pietrzak
