Yesterday I went to the Pacific Corp Access on the Mendon Rd to see if I
could hear the American Bitterns Craig Fosdick mentioned. I only wanted to
stay for a little while as I am in the beginning of a huge landscaping
project in my yard. Yes. I'm getting rid of the grass and puttng in
flowers. I have a lot of grass. Anyway, I digress.... I ended up birding
there until 1:30 in the PM.
I didn't see or hear the American Bitterns (dang!) but I did see and hear
lots of other birds. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I saw 3 Willow
Flycatchers. They were definitely flycatchers. I'm calling them that
because that's the closest thing in Sibley's that describes them. The
list is below. I'm sure there were many other spp that I didn't see. I
could hear a lot of birds whose song I don't know and I never got a look at
them to see who was making the songs. I suspect many were warblers.
Barn Swallows 50
Willow flycatcher 3
Sandhill Crane 4
Black-Headed Grosbeak 4
Wilson's Warbler 4
Song Sparrow 6
American Robin 1 X 10 -e9
Downy Woodpecker 2
Bullock's Oriole 5
Yellow Warbler 6
Mallard 8
White Faced Ibis 7
white Pelican 1 (flying)
Yellow Headed Black Bird 1
Red-Winged Black Bird 5
Brewer's Black Bird 4
Common Grackle 3
Mourning Dove 12
Red Tailed Hawk 2
Northern Flicker 3
Black-Capped Chickadees 3
Western Meadowlark 4
total: 22 spp
