Hello Birders -
As of yesterday, I was informed that the county road used by visitors to
access the bird refuge auto tour route will be closed at the O-line canal,
which is approximately 8 miles west of the wildlife education center,
during the month of June. This is the area that was under construction
last year, and what they're doing is prepping to put the final layer of
asphalt on that section, as well as the parking area around the information
kiosk.
If all goes well, this process should only take a couple of weeks, but it
could take longer. I have assurances that the road will be open on
Saturday, June 20 for our film premiere open house (more on this to come),
but it may be closed during the work week through the end of the month. I
will update via birdtalk as I get more information.
Guided tours of the refuge will be offered in June, July and August as
well. Tour days and times are:
Wednesday 9:00 - 12:00
Thursday 9:00 - 12:00
Saturday 10:30 - 1:30
When the county road is closed, tours will be "behind the gates". When the
county road is open, tours will be around the auto tour route.
I will be updating our web site with this information today, and sending
out a media release as well. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to call the refuge at 435.734.6422 weekdays 8-5; Saturday 10-4
(this is the number for the information desk, and staff SHOULD be able to
answer your questions).
