Some notes about these Crossbills from my perspective. They seemed to be in
an absolute eating frenzy - food was on their mind and it was like a Sunday
afternoon at Chuck-O-Rama. I saw birds actually carrying whole cones in
their bills which was kind of interesting/ neat to observe. I'm guessing
they were grabbing them from the masses on the ground and then flying off to
a place where they could work on them. My experience with Crossbills is
limited and certainly this is the most I've seen in one place and from
extremely close as well. Definitely a memorable experience. I wondered where
these birds might end up and if/when they will split off and breed in pairs
and where that would be. Certainly would be interesting to watch for nesting
behavior in Utah with the large numbers seemingly still here.
