This evening I had at least one calling AMERICAN BITTERN at the PacificCorp
Mendon Rd access point.  There may have been as many as three birds, but it
was extremely difficult to hear, as the bird(s) were very distant, and
apparently far to the north, probably about halfway between Utah Hwy 30 and
Mendon Rd.  Some of the time I could only hear the "pump" part of the song.
Also, the number of "pump-er-lunks" in each was song very few; often only
2-4, versus the 5-8 that I am more used to hearing.  Probably the best way
to hear the birds would be to walk as far north as you can from the Pacific
Corp parking lot.  While traffic on Mendon Rd is much slower and not as
heavy as on Utah Hwy 30, it is still very loud, and I found it very
difficult to hear the birds from the road.
