Yesterday, I had one of the best birding days. I didn't get a huge species
count, but what I did see was awesome. First, I went to the Mendon Rd to
check out the Bobolink. I can't get enough of seeing them. I sent posts
about that from my iPhone, so I won't bore anybody with repeating the event.
After that, I went to Sue's pond and saw the usual gang (BN Stilts,
Pie-Billed Grebes, Ruddy ducks, Redheads, coots, etc.) I did not see teals,
phalaropes or anything else. But it was just nice to be out there listening
to the croaking of frogs and the scolding stilts.
Then, I headed back to the Mendon Rd Bridge where I saw...
Black-headed Grosbeak saw 2, heard more
Western Tanager saw 2, heard more
Yellow warbler 3 or 4
Townsend's Solitaire 1
Northern Rough-winged Swallows approx. 10
Barn Swallows approx. 6
Mourning doves 4
also seen in large numbers:
RedWinged Black Birds
Ibis spp
Canada Geese
Robins
Then, when I got home, I had the best yard visitor yet ...
Red Crossbills, 3 --- Leucocitic male, 1; female 1; male, regular 1
They enjoyed the black oil sunflower seeds in one of my feeders and had a
good time scolding the goldfinches and pine siskins for attempting to come
to the feeder. The leucocitic male was especially aggressive. I've been
hoping they might show up again to day, but so far, nothing. Of course,
we've been doing yard work and so we've probably scared them off.
happy holidays to everyone!
