This morning my wife and I birded Steel Canyon, which is a little north and west of Clarkston, UT (north end of Cache Valley, near the Idaho state line). The roads have recently been graded and are excellent shape. Along the dirt road between Clarkston and Steel Canyon we saw and heard Chipping Sparrows, Vesper Sparrows, Savannah Sparrows, and a Grasshopper Sparrow. We also saw numerous Bullock's Orioles (North 41⁰ 57.882' West 112⁰ 04.693'), Western Kingbirds, and House Wrens. In Steel Canyon we saw several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (North 41⁰ 59.697' West 112⁰ 07.500'), Plumbeous Vireo, Warbling Vireo, a nesting pair of Red-naped Sapsucker, Spotted Towhee, Green-tailed Towhee, Dusky Flycatcher, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Townsend's Solitaire, Pine Siskins, and Lazuli Buntings. I failed to see Mountain Bluebirds, and a Virginia Warbler (normail birds for this area). If you are interested in visiting Steel Canyon, Bridgerland Audubon has field trip planned later this month.
