I seldom see other birders at the Mt Olivet Cemetery, so I thought I would tell
you all about it. You enter from 500S, between 1300E and Guardsman Way. The
cemetery itself is not as interesting as the one in the avenues. But way in
the back, beyond the row of Russian Olives, there is an enormous open field,
perhaps 300 yards by 200 yards. It is rough, never mowed, and there are
several brush piles. I spent 20 minutes birding one of these this morning.
(The one near the easternmost of the two big white abandoned dumpsters.) The
dominant species are HOUSE FINCH, MOURNING DOVE, MAGPIE, and STARLING. In
addition to these, I saw: SAGE THRASHER, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and COMMON
RAVEN. I *think* I saw a CHIPPING SPARROW and a SAVANNAH SPARROW. I had never
seen a sage thrasher so far east.
