Birded Cache Valley for 6 hrs today, hoping to find a new shorebird or two.
Visited the Logan Mitigation Ponds (Sue's Ponds), Logan Polishing Ponds on
3200 W (standing on the tailgate of my truck and looking over the fence),
Cutler Marsh boat launch on Utah Hwy 30, Benson Marina, Bear River Oxbow,
Clay Slough, Amalga Barrens on 7000 N, and Cherry Ck/Richmond WMA.
Lots of cool and expected birds, but pretty weak on the shorebirds. Best
birds were a male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE that stopped briefly in the parking
lot at the Cutler Marsh boat launch on Utah Hwy 30 (Valley View) before
flying north, and a flock of 35 EVENING GROSBEAKS that flew over as I
stepped out of my truck at Cherry Creek (Richmond WMA). That is by far the
largest flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS I have seen in Utah, and it brought a big
smile to my face, because Evening Grosbeak is one of the first birds I
learned, nearly 25 years ago in upstate NY, where flocks of 50-100 birds
were regular winter feeder visitors.
Aside from the strange occurrence of GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE and EVENING
GROSBEAK in the same day in the same county, a HORNED GREBE in alternate
plumage at Clay Slough off of Sam Fellow Rd seemed late, as did two AMERICAN
PIPITs on 7000 N in the Amalga Barrens. As Buck Russell noted in his post,
the three BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Logan Mitigation Ponds are still present;
another male BLUE-WINGED TEAL was at the Polishing Ponds.
Checklists below, good birding, Craig.
