Early this morning I located a Sora in the marshy area in Benson on the west side of 2900 West ( a little north of the church, near the 40 MPH sign). There are no houses in the immediate area, but if there were a house it would be about 3590 north. The GPS location is North 41 degrees 47.951' West 111 degrees 54.430'. The road is paved, but has virtually no shoulders, so be careful if you try to locate the bird. The road is on a levee and is about 15 feet above the marsh. It was the best view I've ever had of a Sora and I was able to get excellent photographs. I first found the bird by hearing its song (car windows were fogged up so I was driving with my window down). The Sora' s maniacal laughter is hard to miss. There was a covey of California Quails in the area.
The next first of year bird I found this morning were Brown -headed Cowbirds sitting on a fence near Sue's pond on the south side of the Logan Landfill. There were five males and one female. The males were all trying to impress the female by standing as tall as possible, with their bills pointing straight up in the air. Periodically the males would break out into a pushing squabble, then went back to standing tall with their bills pointed straight up in the air. I found the Blue-winged Teals at Sue's pond (thanks Craig).
