Message: I spent last week in Utah for a conference for work. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't too cooperative for birding while I was there, but I did manage to visit a few of the local spots including getting the Lewis's Woodpeckers in the usual spot in Salem. After the meeting I headed down to St. George to see my grandma and squeezed in a couple of hours of birding on the Virgin River Parkway last Friday morning (March 20th). Highlights (at least for an East Coast birder) include:
Crissal Thrasher (4-6) Very cooperative and out in the open, singing and collecting sticks for nesting. The pair I saw on the way back were close to where I saw a pair on the way out, but not exactly the same spot, so it could have been 3 pairs rather than 2).
Lucy's Warbler
Abert's Towhee
Gambel's Quail
Cinnamon Teal
Verdin
Bewick's Wren
Rock Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Cedar Waxwing
I parked at the parking lot at the end of Convention Center Drive, and walked south along the parkway. The Crissal Thrashers and Lucy's Warblers were on the first stretch of the trail where the path in near the river.
Thanks again for all of your posts and suggestions for birding locations.
