[Birdtalk] Great Blue Herons

I witnessed a sight on Antelope Island yesterday that was a first for me. While clambering around on the rocks of Ladyfinger Point looking for wrens (found both Bewick's and Rock Wrens, which were busily collecting nesting materials), I became aware of a disturbance caused by two kayakers that were paddling at the very end of the point. The air was filled with birds: gulls, cormorants, and Great Blue Herons. I was amazed to see that AT LEAST 50! herons were disturbed by the intrusion. I had no idea there might be so many at that location.

Also surprising, though less interesting, was the complete absence of ducks. There was not a single duck, of any sort, at the last bridge nearest the island, only a few gulls further out on the Farmington Bay side of the causeway. That may also be a first for me.

Finally, I'd be grateful if someone would email me privately with information regarding Burrowing Owl locations. I've looked for them in all the spots I've seen them in the past, with no luck. But I know others are seeing them on the island. Have they moved, or have I just been unlucky so far this year?

It was a beautiful day. Good birding!
