A little history: I am fairly new to birding and have several feeders in my yard - black oil sunflower, mixed seed on flat feeder and thistle seed feeders, oh and hummingbird. I should mention I live in Herriman. I get the usual finches, sparrows, hummers. I put up a kestrel box in about February of this year, and I have 2 other nest boxes (one for black capped chickadees and an open platform). My neighbor has a Say's Phoebe nesting in his yard (on a rain gutter). I see and hear lots of kestral, meadowlarks, robins, swallows, an occassonal common yellowthroat.
I would love to get orioles to my feeders, and I briefly had a few american goldfinches - is there any hope for me to attract these to this part of the valley? I put out oranges and grape jelly for a few weeks now and nothing.
Also is there any hope for a kestrel or an owl to inhabit my nesting box? I have it about 15 feet high, in a sheltered area next to the house, but we don't have really large trees - the neighborhood is about 4 years old. Is there any hope for more variety or nesting do you think? Or do I have to wait 10 years to get mature trees to get more variety.
