I 've been thinking about how much fun I've had birding for the last 10 years. Seeing a new bird surely adds to any field trip. I think the most fun part of any trip is meeting different people. Each person seems to add a different element to a trip.
Having someone help you identify a bird is the exciting part. As you learn and grow and your list of birds gets bigger, you need to go where a bird is to see a new one. This is where Kris Purdy gets my vote for informing those who are interested in seeing a bird to find it. Have you ever seen one of her postings on the UTAH BIRD TALK website? She leaves little doubt where the bird was seen and identifies the spot with ribbons. Now with new technical devices, such as GPS, she is again in the forefront in listing coordinates.
The monthly trips held by the different Audubon Chapters are a great way to meet new people and have a fun time. Many experienced bird watchers have helped me a lot. Just this year, I went on a trip to St. George led by Dave Hanscom - what a fun three days. Also the monthly trips to Farmington Bay, led by Bob Huntington and Deedee O'Brien, are very informative. The Monte Cristo trip led by Cindy and Steve Sommerfeld and Paul Higgins was a lot of fun and gave me three new birds.
On August 8, I will be leading a trip to Tabiona, Utah. We'll stop at Jordanelle Wet Lands and the Jordanelle Bird Center, stop at Wolf Creek Pass and then on to my cabin (which I've been building for the last five years and will probaby be building for another five years!) for more birding. Lunch will be served there, also.
We will meet at REI on 33rd South and 3285 East at 8:00 am to car pool. Please RSVP to me on my cell phone, 801-867-5001, or to birderpat at hotmail.com. Hope to see you, then.
Pat
