I made a birding trip up Logan Canyon this weekend and visited three
different areas. My first stop was at Sink Hollow near Beaver Mountain
ski resort (8am-11am). The area was loaded with a great variety of birds
and a lot of them were within very close range for great viewing and
photography. I also heard a lot of birds that I wasn't able to identify
by song. I'm not very good with voice or song recognition yet, but the
air was filled with the musical chatter of many birds. Here is a list of
some of the birds that I could positively identify. There were many
others, but these are the birds that I had within 20 feet of me.
Western Tanager
Lazuli Bunting
Downy Woodpecker
Red-Naped Sapsucker
Northern Flicker
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Dark-Eyed Junco
Rufous Hummingbird
Broad-Tailed Hummingbird
Mountain Chickadee
Chipping Sparrow
Robins and Pines Siskin of course
My next stop was the Limber Pine Trail at the summit of Logan Canyon
(11:30am-1:00pm). I was very disappointed in the lack of birds in the
area but I did run into one jewel. Just 10 feet off the trail and only 5
feet off the ground was a Western Tanager nest with 3 fuzzy white chicks
crowded into the 4 inch bowl. I battled the urge to pull back the pine
boughs and get a closer look, so sorry I don't have any pictures. I
could see the nest and chicks pretty good with my binoculars though and
when the parents came to feed, the babies would turn their heads up and
open their relatively huge orange beaks. Needless to say, this was also
a great chance to see the parents up close too. If anyone would like me
to give them directions to the nest, please email me off-net and I think
I can guide you to the nest. The nest is maybe a three block walk from
the parking area. After the jaunt, you could drop down to Bear Lake and
get a Raspberry shake.
My last stop was a quick one at the Lewis M. Turner campground
(1:30pm - 2:30pm). This is the campground near the bottom of the Tony
Grove Road. This was a great spot for Lazuli Buntings and a few Rufous
Hummingbirds. Oh - and the old faithful Wren at the Tony Grove
snowmobile parking loop was still there in the same spot as always. Made
my day J
