Hi,
I met the Great Salt Lake Audubon group at the parking lot near REI. There
was adequate parking for all. The turnout included John Middleton and
Deedee O'Brien. The rest of you missed a pretty good trip.
We stopped along the way and got a Cordilleran Flycatcher then up to Rock
Springs. Here we got Fox Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dusky Flycatcher,
MacGillivray's Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Turkey Vulture, Green-tailed Towhee,
Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Lincoln's Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, Tree Swallow,
Pine Siskin, American Robin, Black-headed Grosbeak, and a couple more I
will remember as soon as I hit send.
Next stop was at the Purple Martin spot. Right away we saw a male flying
over the road. It took a while before we got one to land in the trees for a
better look. In the meantime John walked down the road and found a perched
Red-tailed Hawk that was being mobbed by eight Purple Martins. It finally
flew and we went back to watching the trees. We got Mountain Bluebirds,
Violet Green Swallows, House Wrens, a Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker and a
Male Cassin's Finch.
On we went to the Monument Trailhead. We walked through the trees and found
a family of Three-toed Woodpeckers. One male was nice enough to land fifty
feet away and drum on a dead quakie. Good drum too, it was very loud. A
young Golden Eagle soared above us and we saw a Golden-crowned Kinglet. We
headed back toward the car and saw Mountain Chickadees, Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, and some Red-breasted Nuthatches.
It was lunch time so we went over to the Devil's Kitchen. Where else would
you have lunch up there?
Time to leave, and we had a nice leisurely drive back. I do mean leisurely,
there was an accident on the freeway and it was stopped right out of
Payson. I am sure it took a half hour to go about five miles. Almost nap time.
I would like to thank the Utah County Birders for letting me tag along over
the years with their trips to the Nebo loop.
