Subject: National Geographic Moment - Northern Goshawk in Holladay
Email_Address: lkboice at me.com
Message: January 13th in Holladay (about 8:00 a.m.) I was looking out my window when I saw a pair of Ring Neck Pheasants running along the snow covered bank just along the east side of the Holladay Memorial Cemetery. "Steve! Come here quick!" I hollered out to my husband over and over like a broken record. He ran into the cramped laundry room with me as we saw the pheasants running along, thinking it was really cool when all of a sudden a fight broke out between them. They WEREN'T a pair after all, but two males fighting over territory. Proud of ourselves that we were witnessing an interesting "fight" in the 'hood, another bird swooped down to join them. We thought it was another pheasant, but no, it was a Northern Goshawk! He tried to pick off one of the pheasants, but they both scattered quickly, realizing their territorial fight wasn't worth the risk of being breakfast. My husband and I stood there completely giddy with the fact that we
witnessed what we call a "perfect National Geographic Moment." Time to get a good video camera.
