There's a discussion on the Tweeters list (Washington) of a white-winged
gull that's been wintering in WA for several years that some have
suggested could be an Iceland Gull. Someone posted a link to a site
that has photos of proposed barrovianus Glaucous Gulls wintering in
Japan that are very interesting. I don't know if they're barrovianus
but they show how petite and Iceland-like Glaucous Gull can be. I
thought the photos were especially interesting in light of several
similar birds that showed up in the western US last fall, including at
Logan, UT and Flathead County Landfill, MT. Some of the first winter
birds from Japan have black bleeding back towards the base of the bill
rather than the more clean-cut black tip typically associated with
Glaucous, more like what you might expect of an advanced Kumlien's, and
some are more heavily marked with brown on the scaps and coverts. Enjoy.
