Just thought everyone would appreciate some additional information we have received on our Snowy Plover banding study at GSL.
Over the holidays I received word that one of our adult female Snowy Plovers color-banded on Aug 1 at Saltair beach was resighted at the Navy Base in San Diego Bay on Oct 8. It took awhile for the researchers in California to figure out it may be a Utah bird but there is no question. This female has been resighted on 7 different occasions in the same area and as recently as Dec 31.
We are fortunate in that we have a great photo of the resight in California and a photo of the bird being banded here in Utah http://departments.weber.edu/avianecologylab/resights.htm
This observation coupled with Paul Higgin's observation of a color-banded SNPL on the Antelope Island Causeway (originally banded in California) suggests there may be quite a bit of mixing of interior birds with the Pacific population.
So - please keep your eyes peeled for color-banded birds!!! We gain a lot of information from these resights!!!
Cheers
