Early Monday morning Kathy and I visited Farmington Bay WMA. Among the regulars we found 2 Glaucous Gulls (adult and 2nd year), an adult Mew Gull, 10 Least Sandpipers, Common Mergansers, several Tree Sparrows, and a passing flock of 50 Crows.
A large blackbird flock on Gentile Street in West Layton contained at least 3 dozen Yellow-headed Blackbirds. About 20 Great-tailed Grackles are still hanging out at the Kaysville Ponds, along with several Hooded Mergansers. At Antelope Island Causeway, near mile marker 6, we found a couple hundred Horned Larks and one Lapland Longspur, which obligingly landed on the roadway 50 feet in front of our parked car. North of the entrance station were several hundred Tundra Swans and Canada Geese and one Cackling Goose. The 2 female Long-tailed Ducks were still at the second bridge. At Garr Ranch on Antelope Island the Varied Thrush, Hermit Thrush, Virginia Rail and Great Horned Owls were seen. Also found on the Island were Northern and Loggerhead Shrikes, Barn Owl and Mountain Bluebirds. A return visit to Farmington Bay in late afternoon turned up the adult Western Gull, and 40 or so American White Pelicans.
Final tally for the day was 80 species.
Of interest outside of Utah, the Whooper Swan is still at Hagerman, Idaho. We saw it on Sunday.
Joel
