It was definitely swallow day at Farmington Bay yesterday--free admission all day, and I don't think I've ever seen such numbers or such well-mixed flocks. There were many northern rough-winged swallows present, and I've never seen so many violet-green swallows at this location. Also tree and barn swallows. I added a number of other First of Year birds to my list, including cattle egret (1), snowy egret, white-faced ibis (mostly so distant I didn't even look for a glossy), black-necked stilt, Forster's tern, Bonaparte's (1) and Franklin's gulls, blue-winged teal, a single western kingbird (it always makes me inexplicably happy to see kingbirds back), a pair of brown-headed cowbirds, and eared, western, and Clark's grebes. The mute swan on Glover Pond was definitely a surprise. Saw one Canada Goose couple with (I think) eight goslings.
