In a last minute decision and jerk of my car steering wheel, I exited at
Center street on my way to work and decided a quick 15 minute delay to the
start of my day wouldn't hurt. My intention was to drive by the fields over
by Skipper Bay and look for shore birds where they had been just a
couple, days ago. The fields were empty but for several Robins, Blackbirds,
and Pheasants. As I turned to head back and started South on the connector
road back to the Center street from Skipper Bay I saw a group of sparrows on
the ground and in scrub to the East. I decided to pick through them real
fast - saw a lot of White Crowned Sparrows and then suddenly like a burst of
fire amongst the zebras, the morning sun illuminated a rufous crown. The
first flash in my mind was chipping sparrow but then I saw the whole bird:
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE - one of my favorite birds and a welcome start to the
day. The moral of this story is: work can wait, go birding!
