A group of Utah County Birders went out to watch hawks yesterday. We stopped at the DWR Raptor Watch Day at the Squaw Peak Overlook (Utah County). They had seen a flock of Pinyon Jays fly past about an hour before we got there. This area is Gamble Oak/ Bigtooth Maple habitat and not where one would expect Pinyon Jays.
We headed up to the hilltop up above the parking area and watched for hawks for several hours. We were hoping for a Broad-winged Hawk. Didn't see one. It sounds like the Wellsvilles were the place to be. We did see many Sharp-shinned, Cooper's and Red-tailed Hawks, some Golden Eagles, a couple Kestrels, a Merlin and three Turkey Vultures. There were also Wild Turkey and Mountain Bluebirds in the area.
