After the disappointing trip to the IC, Jeff Bilsky, Carl Ingwell and I headed to Jupiter Peak at Guardsman's Pass to see if the whipping south winds would produce some hawks. We were not disappointed!!!
Between 10:30am and 12:30pm we tallied around 35 hawks with a pretty good variety seen from the flat below the peak, the shack just at the edge of the peak and the pass.
16 Red-tailed Hawk
3 Swainson's Hawk
11 Cooper's Hawk
2 Sharp-shinned Hawk
1 Northern Goshawk (Jeff and Carl only)
1 Northern Harrier
1 American Keaterl
If it weren't for the on and off thunder storm and downpour I would have stayed longer to see what else passed over. Other birds flying around include:
3 Clark's Nutcracker
2 Steller's Jay
5 Mountain Chickadee
3 Red-breasted Nuthatch
2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
8 Mountain Chickadee
1 Northern Flicker
7 Yellow-rumped Warbler
2 Orange-crowned Warbler
2 Chipping Sparrow
10 Dark-eyed Junco
6 Red Crossbill
50 Pine Siskin
Might have been some other stuff I forgot. But it was a great day for hawk watching minus the rain!
Good Birding
