Charles:
Thank you for your posting. You might also look on the same web site at the Northern Flicker (Red-shafted) at the following url: http://greennature.com/gallery/woodpecker-pictures/northernflicker.html. This is a very common wood pecker in Utah. As ants begin to go below the frost line, they begin showing up in backyards looking for suet and seed. Could the bird you enjoyed seeing be a Northern Flicker?
If not, what were the specific features that you noticed on the bird you viewed that led you to the Gilded Flicker identification?
Enjoy the birds,

Message: I saw a Gilded Flicker Woodpecker on October 28th 2008 at 3:30 pm in Lindon Utah. It was on my pear tree just outside my window. I looked at it for about 5 minutes. It moved around the tree and there was a lot of sun, so I saw in very, very well. I was only about 20 feet from it. Here is a picture of it from the web http://greennature.com/gallery/woodpecker-pictures/gilded.html
I m not a birdwatcher so I don t know if it is important. I just know that I have never seen a woodpecker in Utah before. What fun!
Charles
