I've done a lot of driving in the last three days. Brittany and I went out
to the St. George area for an overnighter Sun-Mon. We birded Tonaquint Park
on Sun night, Lytle Ranch on Monday morning & Kolob Terrace area on Mon.
night. I got home and had some catching up to do around the SLC area.
Birded this morning at Farmington Bay & Kaysville ponds. Here are the birds.
Tonaquint Nature Center (10/26/08 1730-1830): Mallard, Gambel's Quail,
Great Blue Heron, Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-Tailed Hawk,
American Coot, Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker, American Robin, Starling,
Abert's Towhee, White-Crowned Sparrow, Great-Tailed Grackle, Red-Winged
Blakbird, House Finch, Lesser & American Goldfinch. The Coop was hunting
Gambel's Quail with no luck.... Fun to watch.
Lytle Ranch (10/27/08 0800-1300): Mallard, HOODED MERGANSER, Gambel's
Quail, Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Red-Tailed Hawk, American Kestrel,
Belted-Kingfisher, Red-Naped Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Black Phoebe,
Say's Phoebe, Common Raven, Verdin, Rock Wren, Bewick's Wren, Ruby-Crowned
Kinglet, Western Bluebird, American Robin, Crissal Thrasher, Phainopepla,
Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-Crowned Sparrow,
Dark-Eyed Junco, House Finch, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch. This was the
most dead I have ever seen Lytle. The wind was blowing in the early
morning. That might have had something to do with it. Ate a pomegranate &
it was really delicious.
Kolob Terrace (10/27/08 1700-1900): Mallard, Red-Tailed Hawk, American
Coot, Lewis's Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Stellar's Jay, Western Scrub
Jay, Common Raven, Mountain Chickadee, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Pygmy
Nuthatch, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Western Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird,
White-Crowned Sparrow, Dark-Eyed Junco.
Farmington Bay & Glover Ponds (10/28/08 1130-1200): Canada Goose, Gadwall,
American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Redhead,
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, Pied-Billed Grebe, Double-Crested Cormorant,
Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Virginia Rail (heard only), American
Coot, Greater Yellowlegs, California Gull, Rock Pigeon, Northern Flicker,
Black-Billed Magpie, Common Raven, Horned Lark (Heard only), Starling, Song
Sparrow, White-Crowned Sparrow, Red-Winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark,
House Sparrow. I only did a quick scan of both areas. Not many raptors.
Didn't find any Broad-Winged Hawks.
Kaysville Ponds (10/28/08 1230-1300) Canada Goose, Gadwall, Mallard,
Northern Shoveler, Green-Winged Teal, Lesser Scaup, Pied-Billed Grebe,
American Coot, Killdeer (heard only), California Gull, Western Scrub Jay.
No sign on Greater White-Fronted Goose or Hooded Mergansers. Darn. If
anyone finds the GWFG, let me know. I'd be down for checking again.
Great birds for me.
Carl
