[Birdtalk] Evening Grosbeaks - Midvale

Hello All,
Last night we spent some of the evening outside and while I was on the
phone, about 30 mins before sundown, I heard some very interesting calls
from overhead. Upset that I missed hearing these birds well, I promptly
hung up and kept a close ear out. Eventually I heard the call again...and
a third time when finally I spotted what I was looking for. The visual was
not great but coupled with the call (I checked the CD's today), I am happy
to say that there are EVENING GROSBEAKS in Midvale as well. I didn't hear
their classic, high-pitched abrupt note (that I'm more familiar with) but
consistently a more burry call...definitely finchy. This was at about
6800S 650 E in Midvale. Tim's report further confirms that there are fair
numbers in the area. Hopefully we'll be seeing more reports. There's
probably enough natural food to keep them busy but it won't be long before
they're invading feeders. In the meantime, keep an ear out!
Otherwise, not much to report from the area other than a decent flock
of MAGPIES (~20) and about 35 MOURNING DOVES hanging out together.

Good Birding,
Matt Williams
Midvale, UT
