Rosemary et al,
A Vermilion Flycatcher sounds like a stretch way up here, but not an impossibility. One was found in Utah County a few years back about this time of year (and it was way colder then than it is now). It was hanging around a stream/ditch close to American Fork Boat Harbor next to Utah Lake. Anything is possible. Check the bird pictures on the different species suggested in these posts on the utahbirds.org photo gallery. Maybe you can find a match.

Red Crossbill may be right but witting on a willow by the river doesn't sound like the right habitat for Red Crossbill. I've seen Red Crossbills on the ground taking gravel and at feeders but otherwise they are in tree tops. Are there coniferous trees close by? And they usually aren't as bright as it sounds like this bird was. If I lived close enough I'd go check this one out. Vermillion Flycatcher prefers riparian areas and it says in Sibley, "found in open bushes or trees near water".

Rosemary, If it was summer, and if Utah was an eastern state, that would be a perfect description of a male Scarlet Tanager. But since these "ifs" obviously don't apply, I don't think it's a Scarlet Tanager. Also sounds a bit like a Vermillion Flycatcher, but I don't think Utah is part of their range. Maybe a Red Crossbill? Bernie Sloan

I am brand new to birding (don't even have a guide yet) and I'm so happy to have found this mailing list! Anyways, I do some work on the Legacy Nature Preserve (west of Legacy Parkway) and yesterday I saw a huge barn owl fly away from my working companions, 2 red tailed hawks and 2 bald eagles who were sitting around for hours. I also saw a small red bird perched on a willow stem by the river. I've never seen anything like it -- the sun was hitting him and he looked almost neon. I think he had gray or black wings, but the rest of him was bright red. Can anyone help me identify him? Sorry, but I didn't have my camera with me. _______________________________________________Birdtalk mailing listBirdtalk at utahbirds.orghttp://utahbirds.org/mailman/listinfo/birdtalk
