Thanks to a tip from Cal Robbins, several members of Wasatch Audubon saw a
LEWIS'S WOODPECKER near the Middle Fork WMA entrance in Ogden Valley, Weber
County, today. There may have been two birds present. We saw one for the
first time in a hedgerow of trees west of the dry Middle Fork of the Ogden
River bridge, just a few hundred feet south of the WMA entrance. Later, we
saw a (the) bird rearranging his or her stash in cracks in the power pole
two poles west of the WMA's entrance. The power pole is the most reliable
place to see this bird since he or she will defend the stash against others,
including his or her mate.
Anderson Cove campground and Pineview Reservoir were quiet today with only a
smattering of common birds in the campground or on the water. Best birds
were probably an adult Bald Eagle in a cottonwood along the south shore and
a few BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the water.
Anderson Cove Campground is located at mile 17.5 of SR-39. The Middle Fork
WMA is located in northeast Ogden Valley. Drive north on SR-39 on the east
side of Huntsville and continue north after SR-39 turns east toward Monte
Cristo. Do not bear left when the main road does after a couple blocks;
continue north and then zig east and zag north until you reach the entrance
to the Middle Fork where the road takes a 90° turn west.
