Hi Birders,
We all care about birds, right? We birders need to rise up and defend the birds of the Great Salt Lake. Please submit your comments today to the EPA, to stop the eco-disaster happening every day on the west shores of the Lake.
If not us, who?
Thanks,
Doug

Subject: Final week: Urge EPA to clean up U.S. Magnesium

Dear Doug,

There is less than one week left to submit a comment urging the EPA to make U.S. Magnesium a Superfund Site.

The EPA is on the right track toward cleaning up decades of toxic contamination at U.S. Magnesium, but it needs to hear from you. Please take a minute to send in your comment by going to http://healutah.org/magcorp, and afterward, please forward this email on to your friends and other networks.

As part of its Hazard Ranking System for the proposed Superfund listing, the EPA gave U.S. Magnesium’s air emissions a score of 100, the highest possible. Expert studies have found dioxin levels in the company’s waste canals to be 2,000 times the levels present at Love Canal, NY. And the wastewater discharged from the plant is stronger than battery acid, causing immediate harm to any living thing that comes in contact with it.

Nearly a fifth of workers have been diagnosed with diabetes, while the latency period for cancer and other diseases means it may take decades for the true scope of health impacts to be revealed.

The EPA's proposed Superfund listing means Utah is closer than ever to finally seeing a clean-up of contaminants that have posed serious threats to human health and the environment for decades. U.S. Magnesium will likely fight this action vigorously, which means it's that much more important for the public to weigh in now.

Please go to http://healutah.org/magcorp to submit your comment, taking a minute to make it personal if you can. The EPA is considering both human health and ecological risks, so whether you live, work, or recreate by the Great Salt Lake, your input is important.

Then, please forward this email or the comment form to your networks.! We need thousands of comments this week.
